Focus on what brings you joy.

Here it is the middle of summer and if you’re like me there are a lot of things on our minds and hearts these days. It’s really easy to get consumed by the world and its events, but I hope that somewhere in your day you are finding something that brings you joy.

For me, one of the things that brings me joy and fulfillment is doing interior design. Seriously, I could work on design projects day and night! Thankfully I have been able to do virtual design projects for families who want to refresh their spaces and have the time to do it on their own.

As an interior designer I’d love to hear about what brings you joy in your home. Is it a family photo that brings a smile or maybe a well put together room that lifts your spirits?
I would love to help each and every one of you create a home that brings joy and peace throughout every room. So to help you understand what it would be like to work with an interior designer, this months topic is about what you can expect when working a designer.

Here is The Design Process….in a nutshell!

First Step: Your Discovery Call

The first thing we do is set up a complimentary phone call or zoom video which we call your Discovery Call.  Here you’ll get to tell me about yourself and your project. In return you’ll get to know me and about what services I offer, and learn how the interior design process works.

This is where you’ll share all about what is not working in your home and what you’d like it to feel like when it’s done. In other wordswhat would bring you joy! I’ll ask questions like,  “What is the room going to be used for? Who is going to be using it? We’ll chat about what you think your design style is. For instance, do you like modern farmhouse, contemporary or traditional decor’.  I may even send a quick questionnaire to help discover your specific design style. This is your opportunity to learn about what I can do for you and for me to discover your hopes and dreams for the space.

If we decide we are the right fit for each other, we’ll move forward to the next step.. the In-Home Consultation.

Step Two: Your In-Home Consultation

Your In-Home Consultation is where I come to your home or business and we sit down face to face to discuss the possibilities for your space. It usually lasts about 2 hours. This is the perfect time to ask me anything and pick my design brain for ideas. Here we will get a real life in depth look at what the project is all about. We’ll get into the specifics of what the needs are for your room. Are there things you’d like to keep and what things can go? Do you want any walls taken down? How many rooms do you want done?

There are several possible outcomes from the consultation.

1) You take my ideas and run with them. Sometimes you just need affirmation of what you were already planning to do and just needed a professional to guide you a bit. A lot of DIY’ers hire me just for the consultation and then take over on their own.

2) I take all the details and put together a custom package based on what you needIf you express to me that you would like to hire me to handle all the details, I will take a few days to put a plan together and give you a detailed list of what I will design for you. I send you what my design fees would be to do the complete project and you make an informed decision on hiring me as your designer. This way you know upfront, before you hire me, exactly what my design fees would be.**A Note on Your Budget** It’s important we have a clear understanding of your available investment right from the beginning. You tell me what you have set aside and we work together from there. Not sure what budget to set? No problem. We can sit down and run through estimates and set the amount from there.  I value open communication throughout the entire process, especially where we are running with costs and spending. Often times the plans have to change and so I believe it’s great to keep you informed all the way

If you agree with the scope of what I will do for you, we move to step three, The Presentation.

Step Three: Presentation

The presentation is super fun. We’ll sit down in my studio and I’ll show you all the floor plans, 3D renderings, fixtures (tile, lighting, cabinets) and the exact furnishings (furniture, window treatments, artwork and decor’) that I have put together to complete your space and make it beautiful. I usually give two floor plan options for you to choose from and you then get to approve all the things you love. If something needs refining, no problem, we tweak the details until you love every bit of  your custom design.

Step Four: Procurement

Now that you have approved your design I go to work on procuring all the products for you. Procurement is the designer’s term for purchasing or ‘shop for’ I manage all the details of ordering and shipping for you so you can relax and not worry about anything. I have access to hundreds of wholesale accounts and love to find custom pieces fit just for you.

Step Five: Installation
Finally the day has come to put it all together..Installation Day!! Depending on the size and scope of your project this is when the furniture gets delivered and I bring in all of your decor’ items and style all the finishing touches. It may not all happen in one day with larger projects but at the end, you get your “Big Reveal” and a final walk through is done to make sure you are 100% satisfied.
I hope you found this information helpful and valuable for when you are ready to take that fun step of hiring an interior designer. And remember to focus on the things that bring you JOY this month!
